I wrote this late last night

i am a silly girl
stealing sugar
from your kisses
as you leave

i have a giddy heart
gathering graciousness
from your pictures
while you are away

i am a really child-like fool
who holds hope
when i can't hold you
on almost every night

Drowning

I think of you mostly
In the bathtub
Surrounded by a warm blanket
Of water and soft pillows
Of bubbles
I close my eyes and then
You are the blanket
Touching every part of me and the pillow I can rest my head on
When I need to

I go down
Far
Down
Under the cover
To play like
I really want and then
I realize
I'm drowning

Weekend Glory by: Maya Angelou

Some ditchy folks
don't know the facts,
posin' and preenin'
and puttin' on acts
stretchin' their necks
and strainin' their backs.

They move into condos
up over the ranks,
pawn their souls
to the local banks.
Buyin' big cars
they can't afford,
ridin' around town
actin' bored.

If they want to learn how to live life right,
they ought to study me on Saturday night.

My job at the plant
ain't the biggest bet,
but I pay my bills
and stay out of debt.
I get my hair done
for my own self's sake,
so I don't have to pick
and I don't have to rake.

Take the church money out
and head cross town
to my friend girl's house
where we plan our round.
We meet our men and go to the joint
where the music is blues
and to the point.

Folks write about me.
They just can't see
how I work all week
at the factory.
Then get spruced up
and laugh and dance
And turn away from worry
with a sassy glance.

They accuse me of livin'
from day to day,
but who are they kiddin'?
So are they.

My life ain't heaven
but it sure ain't hell.
I'm not on top
but I call it swell
if I'm able to work
and get paid right
and have the luck to be Black
on a Saturday night.

Was your weekend glorious? Share.

holding

when i sit in a room
light or dark
it doesnt matter
if i can stare too long at the chair
you sat in or
the painting on the wall
you just took your eyes off of
i suppose that's why
i drop my eyes on the floor

i don't want to see

when i sit in a room
small or large
whichever way
i move
the weathered edges of our memories tickle me
i suppose that's why
i try to hide my toes

i don't want to feel

when i sit in a room
hot or cold
i can not decide what is worse
rejection is a too warm mint tea with fingers down my throat
i suppose that's why
i can't speak
loneliness penetrates my heart on the cool breath of your leaving
forever
i suppose that's why
i cross my arms over my chest

i hold myself together

for Mom

She is the wonderful one
Like children and fingerpainting
Lonely delicate dreams were hers until
She gave them to me

I am her wondrous one
I am her child with delicate familiar fingers
I paint and embolden our dreams
I am never alone and she is never alone
